“Highlands Ranch is a 22,000-acre master-planned community which was founded in 1981. The community has a population of 93,477 in 29,040 single family homes and 3,305 apartments. Highlands Ranch is located 12 miles south of Denver in Douglas County and offers a wonderful quality of life and opportunities for an active lifestyle.” (www.highlandsranch.org)
Many residents commute from Highlands Ranch to Downtown Denver or the Denver Tech Area. However, the city has a growing number of its own local businesses.
Along with other major suburbs of Denver, there are plenty of ‘green belts’, bike paths and public parks. Here’s what the city says about it’s parks and recreations:
“The Highlands Ranch Metro District owns and maintains an impressive network of outdoor recreation amenities. With 22 parks, more than 70 miles of trails, and 2,000 acres of natural open space areas, Highlands Ranch is home to active people and a diverse wildlife population.
In fact, 85 percent of homes in Highlands Ranch are located within one quarter mile of a park, open space area or trail. Our community has approximately 25 acres of park land per one thousand residents.
In addition, there are two skate parks, an outdoor inline hockey rink, four dog off-leash areas, eight lighted public tennis courts, three lighted ball fields, an historic park and three community gardens.
The Backcountry Wilderness Area (formerly known as OSCA), is a wonderful place to hike and view nature.” (www.highlandsranch.org) You can find a few of the city’s recreational activities on their website under ‘recreation’ and ‘parks and openspace’ tabs: www.highlandsranch.org.
