Monument Colorado City Info - More Than Just FSBO Help - Attractions, Events, Wiki Data
Monument is a small town nearest Colorado Springs. It had about 1,971 residents according to the 2000 census. Monument is located in El Paso County. It received its name due to the beautiful rock formations to the West of town.
Monument’s history is rich in Agricultural roots. It was primarily a Potato growing town as well as Fruit and Vegetables and Cattle raising. The D&RG Railroad was used to transport the harvests to other nearby states. The town also had a cheese & creamery factory as well as Monument Nursery to help restore trees burned in the great Mt.Herman fire of the 1880’s.
However, after the Air Force Academy was built, most farms were sold for residential development. “Very little farming or cattle ranching is done now. Many people commute to Pueblo, Colorado Springs and Denver each day to work. Beautiful houses have been built in the timber known now as Woodmoor. Many retired military have liked the area and have bought or built homes here.” (AmericanTowns.com)
The town has a cute whimsical downtown area with several lovely shops.
As of October of 2009 the towns Online website is going thru changes and no access to town calendar or events are available.
