The Chief Niwot curse is a term known to many Boulder Area residents and former residents. Roughly speaking, the curse states that if you ever live in Boulder and move away, you will eventually come back. I myself am a four-time victim of this curse. Or is it a blessing?!
Chief Niwot was a left-handed chief of the Arapaho Tribe and Niwot formed in 1873 as a railroad area, town or gathering. Just outside of Boulder on 119, Niwot is not incorporated but is certainly celebrated. According to records, many Swedish immigrants migrated here and found a church home at the Ryssby Church.
The 2nd Avenue area is the heart of “downtown” Niwot Colorado. The downtown of Niwot Co is now half of the old size it had until 1959 when the Diagonal Hwy project workers took out half the area! But what is left is quaint, popular and relaxing. Niwot Colo is its own little slice of heaven and art. Antiques are a large part of the charm and shopping in this district.
Many who live in Niwot are employed at some large corporation campuses such as IBM and Celestial Seasonings. Niwot is just 5-15 minutes from various parts of Boulder Colorado and is a wonderful part of the For Sale by Owner Boulder County network of homes!
